What kind of blog would this be without an end of the year list or two? I don’t know, but I don’t want to find out. So here you go, with a few words about each.
Albums:
1. The Monitor - Titus Andronicus
I listened to this album more than any other this year. Such power and honesty and thoughtfulness.
2. The Age of Adz - Sufjan Stevens
I love Sufjan Stevens and this new direction he’s taking. “I Want To Be Well” is my favorite track, I think.
3. Have One on Me - Joanna Newsom
Such a beautiful album. Great album photography too!
4. The Wild Hunt - The Tallest Man on Earth
One of the best contemporary sing-songwriters. He’s got great energy and keeps things interesting.
5. Dear God I Hate Myself - Xiu Xiu
Chocolate makes you happy.
6. Heaven is Whenever - The Hold Steady
Another strong album from my home town favorites. “The Weekenders” and “The Sweet Part of the City” are standouts for me.
7. Inter-Be - Peter Wolf Crier
These guys are strongest live but this album is great too.
8. Treats - Sleigh Bells
Summer.
This was a fun year as far as live shows go. These were the standouts:
1. The Flaming Lips at Barton Hall
2. Titus Andronicus at Castaways
3. Why? and Deerhoof at First Avenue
4. Deer Tick at Castaways
5. Midlake at the Cedar Cultural Center
6. Mates of State at the 400 Bar
