I got the opportunity to see two amazing bands on Saturday.  Why? and Deerhoof played First Ave. in their only show together on this tour.  It was a great mix of the lyrically stellar Why? alongside the instrumentally stunning and experimental Deerhoof.  I got this sweet silk screen print poster that has a landscape of parts from the 35-W Bridge that collapsed.  It was a great show.  Peace.

Castanets - All That I Know to Have Changed In You

You know, dear, that when I sing
it is your voice that I am hearing
it is your language
old and echoing

And you know, friend, that when I falter
freeze in the face of this we can’t alter
it is all that I know to have changed in you
it makes me work harder

You know, love, that I hold you highest
though I stray and I struggle
and often deny it
it is your mercy beacon
of which I’m abiding

Delta Spirit - Trashcan (Acoustic on Daytrotter)

These guys are coming very soon and I would like to go but due to various financial frustrations, I am quite poor at the moment.  The money from the video contest hasn’t come yet so this concert depends on the timeliness of that.  But anyway.  Enjoy this tune for your Monday.  And happy birthday Mari!  Peace.

Edit: Also- Xiu Xiu’s Dear God I Hate Myself.  Yes.  Peace.

New To Me #3.

As I’ve done from time to time since coming to school out here, I like to compile a little list of some new music that I’ve been introduced to that has struck me as particularly great.

Turbo Fruits- I saw these guys open for Surfer Blood at a coffee shop near my school and it was one of the best shows I’ve seen all year.  These guys have a lot of energy and can really kick some ass.  They’re from Nashville and you should head over to their site and download the songs they are giving away.  I’ve been especially loving the ever so catchy whistling in “Mama’s Mad Cos I Fried My Brain.”

Surfer Blood- These guys put on a great show as I mentioned earlier and I especially liked the cool percussion things they were doing (blocks and cowbells and other fun stuff like that).  They looked super young and I don’t know how old they are but it was cool to see such talent coming from them.  I’m excited to see these guys mature and create.

Why?- I’ve mentioned these guys before but in the last 6 months, this band has quickly risen to the top of my most played list.  They blend elements of hip-hop with pop hooks and rock elements while doing some cool experimental stuff along the way.  I can’t get enough.  They’re playing this summer in Minneapolis with Deerhoof and I’m currently trying to get those tickets.

Now I should get to some real work that needs to get done.  Have a lovely evening folks.  Peace.
