Something to think about.

I just returned from a fundraiser for the ThreeSixty Journalism Program that I’m involved with.  There was a silent auction and local anchors Robyn Robinson and Tim Sherno were MC’s and New York Times writer David Carr gave a speech.  He talked about the state of journalism and I think he had some good things to say.  He talked about how industry is not doing well (old news) and how a lot of bad journalism is being done, some in blogs and such but not all the time.  I think some of what he said was really important though, I think there are a lot of people, myself included, who use this format to tell people about our lives and show off pictures and such.  And there’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s just fluff.  His point was that there still needs to be people doing good journalism by doing good stories that affect people’s lives and hit hard.  I think there is a lot of truth in that.  I don’t think I’ll be a journalist but who knows.  I have written for a paper the past three years and have enjoyed it but it’s never been a real passion of mine like it is for some.  I prefer film.  But this also makes me think that maybe I should try to add some more meaningful content to this blog to, if anything, help me become a better writer and a better journalist.  Something to think about.
