State Pride.
I’ve noticed since moving east that I have a lot more state pride than anyone I’ve met out here. I do have a lot of state pride and I guess I thought that it was generally the way people felt if they even mildly liked their state, but I’m finding that to be less and less true. I think it may stand out more now because I’m one of the handful of students from the Midwest, but I think it’s just that I have a lot of admiration for a lot of the people, things and arts that come out of Minnesota and that isn’t just something that has come about since moving to the east coast.
It’s true that there are things that I will like better for the sole fact that they came from Minnesota. It may sound weird but it’s true. Knowing that a band is from where I’m from allows me to relate to them more so when Craig Finn sings, “Take Lyndale back to the southside. Take Nicollet up to the Vietnamese. Take Penn Ave back up to the northside. Take Lowry east to the quarry,”; or when Slug raps “I used to know a man who met a woman, dont remember where, big beautiful eyes and light brown hair, she was from the burbs, he was from the south side of the city, this was back when Franklin avenue was still pretty,” I take pride in knowing where those places are and having walked on those streets.
I love it out here and I’m so happy to be here, but Minnesota and Minneapolis will always hold a special place in my heart no matter where I find myself. Peace.
