Production.
I’m taking a cinema production course this semester and for our first project we’re working with a Bolex 16mm camera. It’s a funny looking thing with a crank on one side and this three lens turret on the front but it’s fun except for the fact that film is expensive 20-30 bucks for 100 feet, which translates to about 2 1/2 minutes of footage. But there are advantages to that, it makes me really take my time and set up shots just how I want them and it has gotten me on the storyboarding bandwagon. Saves so much time when shooting comes around, I can’t imagine shooting a narrative without at least a basic storyboard now.
So this weekend I shot my roll of film for my group project. Now I have to send it off to the lab and I’ll get it back processed and a version on a CD so I can edit it digitally. It’s a lot of fun and I think this is an opportunity that a lot of film students don’t get, having a camera in their hands first semester. I feel really fortunate to be in such a hands on program. Next project deals with me recording audio and using found footage. It should be a compelling project. Peace.
